Less is More…in Business & Life

Less is more…more so today, in the age of information deluge and overload. The axiom transcends design and time, and needs to be applied today, as we find ourselves and our customers being transformed into information zombies with near-zero attention spans.

Oh wait! Were those birds chirping…?!

As consumption addicts, we are constantly running away from our own mind’s Zen-talk (and/or inner chatter), and that of the friend sitting in front of us “in-person”. We are comfortable only when connected to that consumption device — checking those emails/WhatsApp messages/Facebook updates every alternating minute while taking a mini-minute break from switching between those hundreds of television channels, streaming online videos, thousands of daily internet articles and blogs on that topic of interest; finding ourselves craving for that iTunes/Spotify song, even while running through the park; trying hard to zone out those birds eh?! Oh wait! Were those birds chirping…?!

As businesses, our communication and advertisements are cluttered with information, trying to occupy every pixel of that prime digital online or print real estate — foregoing quality for quantity, instead of differentiating through a lot more powerful “less”: a simple graphic, a crisp message aimed at that information inundated customer.

Simple is tough.

Don’t forget that space/emptiness is an essential ingredient of good design. Each empty pixel contrasts and amplifies the impact of a filled pixel. Simple is tough. It requires multiple iterations to simplify, and capture the essence, but it is worth it in the end.

Keep it simple and short. Less is more.
